Well, I've had a chance to put my new ring flash (Emoblitz DRF-14) through its paces, and I have to say that I am very happy with the results. It is absolutely great for closeup work. Also, for a ring flash, this unit was very inexpensive, I bought it for $139 over at adorama.com, one of the few online stores I trust for purchasing camera gear and accessories.
It natively screws onto a 52mm filter thread and comes with adaptor rings to fit may other sizes 55mm, 58mm, 62mm, and 67mm. One thing to note about this is when using the adaptor rings on larger threads be sure to remove any filters you might have on the lens or you will get some vignetting. The only real downside is that it doesn't have a PC connector to trigger off camera flashes in sync with the ring flash, hwoever that is easy to get around with a hot shoe passthru block with a PC connector. All in all, I highly recommend this flash for an inexpensive ring flash that gets the job done, does it well. Here are some sample shots taken on a Canon Rebel XTi with the "plastic fantastic" 50mm f/1.8:
